The area now known as Newport News was originally called "Warwick River" By the native Wecotaocs.

Dutch colonist fist arrived at Newport News in 1619 and established a long-lasting settlement in 1621. William Pierce, a surgeon, documented the first successful cultivation of tobacco by an English colonists in North America at Newport News.

Newport News has a long history dating from the colonial period, and was a major shipbuilding center during WWII.

Newport News Park is a 7,711-acre park located in Newport News. It is currently one of the largest municipal parks east of the Mississippi River. The park was developed on land that was previously the site of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. The park features bike paths, picnic areas, a disc golf course, nature trails, a boat ramp, and a fishing pier.
