The area now known as Dunn Loring was originally owned by Thomas F. Mason, a politician and lawyer who served as the mayor of Washington, DC. He named his estate Dunn Loring, after the town of Dunn, Ireland.
The area was unincorporated until the late 19th century when the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad came through. The railroad brought businesses and residents to the area and led to its incorporation as a town in 1894. The town was largely agricultural until the 1950s and 60s, when housing subdivisions began to sprout up. As the town grew, residents sought to incorporate as a city, but nearby Falls Church opposed the incorporation because the town did not have enough residents to meet state requirements. In 1962, residents of Dunn Loring petitioned the state for city status, but failed because their petition did not meet state requirements. In 1967, the town finally incorporated as a city.
Dunn Loring has several points of local interest, including the Dunn Loring History Museum, the Dunn Loring Volunteer Fire Department, a historic log cabin, a replica of the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad depot, the Glenn C. Hoffman Memorial, and the William B. Shockey III Park.
