In 1840, a community called Mesquite was founded about 2 miles (3 kilometers) south of the current location. In 1844, the town was ambushed by Karankawa Indians, who killed and scalped one of its leaders. The town was abandoned, and its inhabitants relocated to the current location. Mesquite was formally founded in 1841. In 1853, the town's first church, Mesquite Methodist Church, was constructed, and it is still in operation today. Mesquite was officially incorporated on March 24, 1854, and it opened its post office in 1856. When the first railroad was built in 1873, the town experienced significant development. In 1887, Mesquite was designated as the seat of Dallas County. The city has been expanding steadily ever since.
