West Warwick is a town in Kent County, Rhode Island, United States. It is situated within the Providence metropolitan area. The population was 29,144 at the 2020 census.
West Warwick was incorporated in 1913, from the western half of Warwick. The town was originally an agricultural community, with dairy cattle, apple orchards, and stone quarries being significant features of its economy. Today, most of the agricultural establishments have disappeared, and it is now a bedroom community.
The town hosts a music festival over the 4th of July weekend that brings in multiple acts and food vendors. People from all surrounding communities attend.
The town has a mayor and a town council.
The town's recreation department maintains several football and baseball fields, a skatepark, and the Scituate Reservoir, which allows for fishing, boating, and other recreational activities.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has an area of 27.3 square miles (70.7 km; 27,289 acres), with 26.5 square miles (68.6 km2) of it being land and 0.8 square miles (2.1 km; 214 acres) (2.95%) being water.
West Warwick borders Coventry to the west, Cranston and Scituate to the north, Warwick to the east, and Exeter to the south.
West Warwick has a mayor-council form of government. Voters elect a mayor to a two-year term in even-numbered years. The mayor serves as the town's chief executive and has a vote on the town council. The town council has seven members, elected in even-numbered years to two-year terms.
Public education in West Warwick is managed by the Warwick Public School System, which serves Warwick and West Warwick.
West Warwick has several churches spread across various denominations.
Veterans Memorial Highway (Interstate 95) and Route 2 (a bypass of Providence) are major roads that pass through West Warwick.
