Upper Providence Township is located along the western border of Delaware County. It is bordered to the west by Chester County, to the north by West Chester, to the east by Middletown Township, and to the south by Springfield Township.

Upper Providence has a total area of 22.8 square miles (59 km2). The township is located in a region of rolling hills and fertile soil not far from the Brandywine River.

Upper Providence Township is part of the Philadelphia-Camden-Wilmington, PA-NJ-DE-MD Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Upper Providence Township was founded in 1800 when it was separated from the adjacent Middletown Township.
