Historically, the region was once the home of the Lenape people. In 1735, it was settled by the Minsi (or Munsee) tribe, who called the area "Lechaw Athuropipe," which means "where there are forks." The area was later named "Catasauqua" because of the Catasauqua Creek, which flows through the area and empties into the Lehigh River. The name Catasauqua is derived from the Lenni Lenape word "gwekoko," which means "at the forks."

The first European settler in Catasauqua was Pennsylvania Dutch, who purchased land from theNative Americans in 1740. Through the end of the 18th century, most of the population was of Pennsylvania Dutch ethnicity. In 1807, a bridge was built over the Lehigh River, and in the early 19th century, the Lehigh Canal was constructed, which brought prosperity to the area. The construction of the Lehigh Valley Railroad in 1855 further increased the industrial boom in Catasauqua.

Catasauqua's economy was based on agriculture, mining, and quarrying. In the late 19th century, cement production became a major industry in the area. The Atlas Portland Cement Company, now Cement Elementary School, was one of the world's largest cement producers. The plant closed in 1982, but the landmark smokestack still stands and is visible from all areas of the town. Locals have called for its preservation and restoration as a historical landmark. In 2008, the smokestack was officially named a Pennsylvania Historical Landmark.

In 1846, Catasauqua became a borough. In 1886, the St. Luke's Hospital and Home for the Aged were built. Today, it serves as a hospital and is the oldest hospital in the Allentown area. In 1901, St. Mary's Catholic Church was built, and in 1913, the George Taylor House was built. The Catasauqua Public Library was built in 1908, where Dr. Seuss's father was a frequent visitor.

Dr.Seuss was a famous resident of Catasauqua. He was born in nearby Allentown and attended Dartmouth College. His father, Theodor Robert Geisel, was a brewmaster in Catasauqua and served as the vice president of the Fleischer Studios. Dr.Seuss. was known for his whimsical drawings and was a cartoonist for the DartmouthJack-O-Lantern, the school's humor magazine. He became well-known for his political cartoons and wrote and illustrated 46 children's books, such as How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Horton Hears a Who, and Green Eggs and Ham.

Because of Dr. Seuss grew up in the area, the city holds a number of events to commemorate the author of children's literature. One event is held at the Trexler Nature Preserve, where visitors can walk along the six miles of trails and look for signs of wildlife like foxes, coyotes, and huge owls. Also, the Catasauqua Free Public Library holds a Dr.Seuss celebration yearly.

Additionally, in 1998, Theodore Buehrer, a local resident, started a grass-roots movement to recognize Dr. Seuss's contribution to literature and the arts in Catasauqua. The movement resulted in the unveiling of a massive metal sculpture of Dr. Seuss's characters in 2002. The sculpture was created by local artists James Englehardt and Brian Hanse.

Special events held in Catasauqua include Music Under the Stars, which is a free outdoor concert series held at the William J. Albert Memorial Park. The outdoor amphitheater in the park also hosts outdoor movies, community theater, and summer concerts. Vasi's Tavern on Front Street is a popular local bar; it has hosted many festivals celebrating Greek and German heritage.
