The community was named after a notify castle built in 1840 by a Mr. Shannon for his family. It was thought that the castle was built on a site where, according to Indian lore, a surveying party led by George Washington had camped.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has an area of 1.4 square miles, all of it land; no water surface exists within the city'ory limits. The city is bordered by the townships of Upper St. Clair (South and west), Bethel Park (Southeast), and Mt. Lebanon (East). The city of Pittsburgh abuts Castle Shannon to the north, northwest, and west.

Castle Shannon is situated at the southern end of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Interstate 79 passes through the city and easily connects the city to Washington County and Pittsburgh to the north and the West Virginia Panhandle to the south.

Castle Shannon has a humid continental climate, typical of much of northeastern US, with cold winters and hot summers. Precipitation is consistent throughout the year, although summer tends to be the wettest season.

Over the years the community has been home to various industry and services that include tie and timber mills, glass factories, foundries, steel works, coal mines, and distilleries. Today, its economic focus has shifted to retail and service industries. St. Clair Hospital is one of the city's largest employers. Other major employers include the Castle Shannon Library, the Castle Shannon Volunteer Fire Department, and Planet Fitness.

In 2006, the city celebrated its 130th anniversary with yearlong celebrations that included, among other things, a parade, a car show, and fireworks.

Local landmarks include the Old Stone House (built 1822) and the Roman Catholic church of St. Anne's (built 1915, closed 2018) which was designed by architects Vitale & Johns and sculptor Joseph A. Kiselewski and features a self-supporting stone dome.

Notable natives include Bob Schmetzer, former baseball player for the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and Atlanta Braves; Andy Capp, American comic strip created by Reg Smythe; and William D. Bensyl, fighter ace, World War II.

The city is home to Collins Kitchen, a family-owned bakery that has been featured on "Man v. Food" for their famous sandwich, the Chicken Milanesa, which their local sports teams play their home games- Castle Shannoon High School and the local youth sports programs.
