West Haven-Sylvan, like the rest of the Portland metropolitan area, has a mild marine climate (Köppen climate classification Cfb), with mild, rainy winters and mild, dry summers. The hottest month is July, with an average high temperature of 78°F, while the coldest month is December, with an average low temperature of 35°F. The maximum temperature recorded in West Haven-Sylvan was 108°F on July 31, 1965, and the minimum temperature recorded was -4°F on January 10, 1880.

The post office in West Haven opened in 1885; in 1912, the entire area was incorporated as the city of Sylvan.
