History:

Jenks was founded in 1904 along the Arkansas River and named for the Arkansas Railway Company's general manager, Joseph B. Jenks. Jenks grew rapidly from 1908 to 1910 when the railway company built a railway bridge over the river. The city's early economy was based on agriculture,with cotton, corn,brick, and broom production being major commodities. When oil was discovered in the area in1912, Jenks became a center for the petroleum industry. During the Great Depression, the town's population declined, and the economy suffered. However, oil production and local businesses helped the town recover in the 1930s.

As of the census of 2000,there were 13,721 people,5,069 households, and 3,914 families living in the city. The population density was1,181.6 people per square mile (456.3/km2). There were 5,487 housing units at an average density of 476.5 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 78.43%White, 0.43% African American, 4.59% Native American, 0.23% Asian,0.04% Pacific Islander, and 1.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.45% of the population.
