In 1795, Benjamin Loveland bought 400 acres north of Cincinnati and moved his family to the area, which was then known as "Loveland's Station." In 1836, the area was incorporated as the "Village of Loveland." [9] The village was strategically located at the confluence of the Miami Rivers and was a major stop along the Underground Railroad, helping slaves to reach freedom in the Northern United States and Canada. [10] During this time, in 1874, the village began to grow rapidly after the construction of the Cincinnati & Columbia Railroad, with trains passing through the town daily. With the village growing, a new railroad station was built, and the town's population continued to increase. [11] The village continued to grow and thrive, and in 1971 the village officially became the city of Loveland. [12] Loveland has three sister cities, as designated by Sister Cities International: [13] - Newtownards, Northern Ireland, - Oneur, France - Ea Kly, Cambodia
