Denison, an early Licking County settler, bought 200 acres of land and built a cabin near the intersection of present-day Main Street and Ridgely Tract Road. In 1855, a post office was established-with Denison as postmaster-and the village was known as "Denison's Heath" after a local physician.

By the turn of the 20th century, Heath had a population of a few hundred residents and boasted an impressive number of businesses and services, including a newspaper, two banks, a creamery, and a number of mills.
