Before European settlement, Minot's residents were members of the Dakota tribe. After the railroad reached the area in 1886, cities began to develop. In 1883, George Washington Manvel, a judge and newspaper editor, suggested calling the city site "Minot" after his friend Henry D. Minot, a member of a wealthy Philadelphia family. The town was incorporated on June 13, 1885, and the city of Minot was incorporated on December 27, 1887. At the time of its founding, the city had 2,300 residents.

As of the census of 2010, there were 40,888 people residing in the city. The population density was 2,442.3 inhabitants per square mile. There were 22,421 housing units at an average density of 1,368.4 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 84.3% White, 1.5% African American, 3.2% Native American or Alaska Native, 2.3% Asian,<0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 3.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.

Transportation

The city is served by Minot International Airport and is situated at the intersection of U.S. Route 83 and U.S. Route 2. U.S. Route 52 is also nearby.
