History

Reidsville was originally established in the early 19th century as a small settlement called "Winston-Salem" astride the road connecting the towns of Winston (now Winston-Salem) and Salem (now a historic district of Winston-Salem). The settlement was started by a group of colonists from the British Isles and was named after the Reid family, who were among the first European colonizers of the Rockingham County area. With the arrival of railroads in the 1880s, Reidsville grew into a thriving textile manufacturing center.

There were 6,116 households, out of which 24.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.3% were married couples living together, 17.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.4% were non-families. 35.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.20, and the average family size was 2.83.
