westmoreland,New YorkWestmoreland is a town in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 6,711 at the 2020 census. The town is named after the historical region of Westmorland in England.

Westmoreland is situated approximately 15 miles (24 km) northwest of Rome, New York, and 120 miles (193 km) east of Syracuse, New York.

Westmoreland is known for its agriculture, and it is home to the annual Westmoreland State Fair. The fair has taken place every August since 1920, except for a brief hiatus during World War II. It features live music, 4-H animal shows, tractor pulls, and a demolition derby.

Westmoreland also hosts the annual WestmorelandHeritageFest, which celebrates the town's heritage with a Civil War re-enactment, horse-drawn wagon rides, live music, and a fish fry.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,711 people, 2,467 households, and 1,802 families residing in the town. The population density was 49.3 people per square mile (19.0/km². There were 2,644 housing units at an average density of 19.7 per square mile (7.6/km²).

The racial makeup of the town was 97.66% White, 0.34% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.45% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.08% of the population.

There were 2,467 households, out of which 34.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.4% were non-families. 21.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.19.

In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.4% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $36,442, and the median income for a family was $41,181. Males had a median income of $32,044 versus $20,833 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,673. About 4.4% of families and 6.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.5% of those under age 18 and 9.1% of those age 65 or over.
