Wallkill is a town in the state of New York'utica–Rome Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town has a population of 12,681 people, according to the 2020 census. The town of Wallkill is in Orange County, New York, in the United States. It is a rural town situated in the southeastern quadrant of the county, southwest of Newburgh. Interstate 84 passes through the town, which borders the towns of Montgomery to the west and Hamptonburgh to the east. The town's major streams are the Wallkill River and the Lept-on Kill.
Cultural
The Town of Wallkill Historical Society and Museum is in Middletown, New York, United States. The 1872 Methodist Church building houses it. The town of Wallkill Historical Society was founded in 1976 as a bicentennial project. The Wallkill Museum chronicles the town's history, featuring exhibits on the flooding of the Neversink and the development of the railroad.
The primary annual event in Walden, New York, is known as the "Wallkill Valley Rail Trail Festival." This free, family-friendly event is a celebration of the recently paved part of the trail from Geddes to Walden. A portion of Route 208 and former Conrail railway is taken over by the trail. Local businesses and organizations have donated many fun-filled activities and live music to this event.
The Wallkill Valley Rail Trail is a 1.75-mile paved path along the former Wallkill Valley Railroad and is suitable for both hikers and bikers. According to the Wallkill Valley Land Trust, the trail follows the path of the Ulster and Delaware Railroad, established in 1872 and sold to Conrail in 1977. CSX bought Conrail in 1999 and took possession of the line until a flood caused by Hurricane Ivan made it impassable in 2004.
Local attractions
Wallkill corridor State Historic site, where the Appalachian Trail intersects with New York State Route 52, commemorates the D&H Canal's history. The trail's western end meets the Shawangunks' already existing High Falls Conservation Area. The wall kill corridor includes the towns of Gardiner, Shawangunk, and Wawarsing.
Delaware and Hudson Canal
The Wallkill Valley Rail Trails and The Delaware and Hudson Canal are significant landmarks in the Wallkill town region. The D&H Canal Depot Museum, Town of Wawarsing, Ulster County, New York, USA, is open weekends during the warmer months. The D&H Canal was a successful 19th-century anthracite coal transportation system from Pennsylvania's Lackawanna County.
Wallkill is in the Ulster County town of Shawangunk, close to Mohonk Preserve's glacial ponds, cliffs, and white pine forests. It is possible to hike, run, bike, rock climb, and horseback ride, among many other things. The Trapps mountain home range, Minnewaska State Park Preserve, is situated on the Shawangunk Ridge. The ridge, rising 2,000 feet above sea level, features numerous scenic cliffside viewpoints.
In Shawangunk, close to Wallkill, The Gunks Chief is a popular location for rock climbing and repelling. The Mohonk Preserve Visitor Center is located across from Minnewaska's entrance. Visitors can do activities other than rock climbing, such as skiing, snowshoeing, bird watching, and biking. The Nature Trail House and Buttercup Clearing are connected by a walkway.

According to the census of 2000, there were 10,939 people living in the town. There were 2,875 families and 3,681 households. The population density was 261.4 people per square mile. The town's racial makeup was 94.7 Hispanic, 3.17 percent of the population were two or more races, 2.59 Asian, 1.35 Black or African American, and 0.23 percent Native American.
Economically, the village relies mostly on small enterprises. Several companies in town are involved in agriculture, growing apples, among other items. The People's Place, Inc. Thrift Store in Wallkill provides counseling, career advice, job placement, food, clothing, furniture, and crisis intervention. The nearby town of Ulster employs 365 people at its highway and central garage, courthouse, and sheriff's office.
The 2000 census shows that, out of a total of 3,681 residences, 344 of them (9.3 percent) had kids under the age of 18 living there. 54.2% of married couples reside in the town. The median age in Wallkill is 37.6 years. $58,557 is the median household income, while $67,171 is the median family income. Males have a median income of $46,335 versus $30,948 for women.
