Shirley is located in the Town of Brookhaven. Settlers from England, Ireland, and Germany arrived in the early 18th century. The village was named after a prominent resident, Samuel Shirley.

During the 180os, the village was a major producer of pork and beans. In 1911, the village was officially named Shirley and became a popular vacation spot for farmers from the North.
