Schodack, New York, is a Town in Rensselaer County, New York, US. As of the 2020 census, the population was 7,218.
Location and Geography
Schodack is located in the eastern part of Rensselaer County, southeast of Albany, the state capital. It is bordered by the city of Albany to the north, the town of Bethlehem to the east, the town of Nassau to the southeast, the town of Sand Lake to the south, and the town of Rotterdam to the west.
The town has a total area of 35.8 square miles (93 km2), of which 34.7 square miles (90 km2) is land and 0.97 square miles (2.5 km2), or 2.69%, is water.
The Hudson River forms the western boundary of the town, and the city of Albany is located across the river.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 7,044 people, 2,436 households, and 1,868 families residing in the town. The population density was 203.1 people per square mile (78.6/km²). There were 2,602 housing units at an average density of 74.4 per square mile (28.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 95.10% White, 2.35% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 3.32% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.40% of the population.
There were 2,436 households, out of which 34.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.6% were married couples living together, 8.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.6% were non-families. 19.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.84 and the average family size was 3.28.
The town's population was spread out, with 25.0% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.5 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $49,474, and the median income for a family was $56,447. Males had a median income of $39,757 versus $29,911 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,817. About 4.0% of families and 5.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.5% of those under age 18 and 8.0% of those age 65 or over.

History
The area now known as Schodack was first settled in 1652 by Dutch colonists. The town was formed in 1795 from part of the town of Watervliet.
The name "Schodack" comes from the Iroquoian word for "fireplace" or "furnace".
In 1802, the town was reduced to form part of the new town of Bethlehem.
In 1807, the town was further reduced to form the town of Nassau.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the stone quarry was a major industry in Schodack.
On July 12, 1924, lightning struck the steeple of the Schodack Reformed Church, causing it to collapse.
