Halfmoon is a town in Saratoga County, New York, United States. The population was 21,534 at the 2010 census. The town is named after the crescent-shaped Half moon Lake, which is situated mostly within its borders.
The formerly independent village of Round Lake is now part of Halfmoon. The town is part of the Saratoga Springs, New York, metropolitan statistical area.
The area was first settled around 1787. The town of Halfmoon was formed from part of the town of Waterford in 1812. The town has many attractions and places of interest, including the Halfmoon historical society museum.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.9 square miles, of which 34.4 square miles are land and 1.5 square miles (4.19%) are water. Part of Halfmoon Lake State Park is in the southwestern part of the town, and the park has a swimming beach, picnic areas, fishing spots, and a boat launch onto the lake, as well as a nature trail around the lake.
As of 2010, the population was 21,534. The racial makeup was 94.5% white, 1.9% Asian, 2.6% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino were 1.2% of the population.
The median age was 42 years old, and 22.8% were under the age of 18, 5.8% were between 18 and 24, 24.4% were between 25 and 44, 34.7% were between 45 and 64, and 12.2% were aged 65 years or older. For every 100 females, there were 128.9 males.
The median income for a household was $69,359, and the median income for a family was $81,375. Males had a median income of $52,000 versus $39,837 for females. The per-capita income was $34,742. About 1.9% of families and 3.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.1% of those under age 18 and 3.8% of those age 65 or over.
The majority of the town's population is Caucasian, with white residents accounting for 83.1% of the population as of 2010. Hispanic residents account for about 2.6% of the population.
The town celebrates Memorial Day annually on the last Monday in May at the Elks Lodge and Park on Route 9. A veterans memorial is dedicated to the men and women who served in the military.
The Halfmoon historical society museum exhibits information and artifacts about the town's history, including books and photographs depicting the history of the area.
