Great Neck has a population of 10,202 as of 2020 USA census.

The first European settler in Great Neck was from England, Edwin Earle, in 1661. The town's first name was "Madnan's Neck." On November 18, 1661, Edward Earle bargained with Madnan for land and agreed to share his rights with Job Onderdonk. The very next year, Earle made a purchase from the Indians of the neck. At the unveiling of the statue of President Washington in front of the old village hall, Augustus Field Tracy (Democrat), a former president of the village, said, "When we review the history of our country, and when we look at that statue, we are reminded that it was the attitude of George Washington toward the principal object of his ambition and devotion that created such a chord between him and his soldiers that all of them followed him into the mouth of hell itself."

Great Neck has, at the very least, seven places listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and three further locations were listed but have since been removed. Great Neck is also home to a nationally renowned synagogue, Congregation Beth-El, of the Conservative Jewish movement. The Great Neck Public Schools serve students in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade. Bethpage Union Free School District serves Great Neck students in grades K-6.

Great Neck is connected to New York City via the Great Neck LIRR Station. The Great Neck Park, unofficially known as Steppingstone Park, hosts outdoor concerts and other cultural events. Near Steppingstone Park, along the beach, is a large playground, a private pool, and a public beach. Great Neck Harbor Lighthouse is situated in Great Neck. Great Neck is also home to two yacht clubs: the Manhasset Bay Yacht Club and the Great Neck Yacht Club.
