Garden City is a village in Nassau County, New York, United States, on Long Island. As of the 2020 census, the population is 22,401.
Garden City was founded in 1869 when Alexander Turney Stewart, a multi-millionaire entrepreneur, and Stewart bought a big piece of land in Hempstead Plains. He designed garden City as a planned community for people looking to escape the congestion of New York City.
Stewart designated 500 acres for the construction of institutions of learning, including a college for women. It was chartered in 1873 as the Adelphi Academy for Young Ladies, under the sponsorship of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.
The most current mayor is Cosmo A. Ferraro, who is the first Italian-American mayor of Garden City.
Local attractions include the Garden City Bird Sanctuary, the Garden City Dog Park, and the Long Island Railroad Museum. The Garden City Park is a 204-acre park located between Franklin Avenue and Cathedral Avenue. The park hosts several athletic fields, a playground, and a dog run. The Long Island Rail Road Museum is open on weekends between May and October.
Garden City has several restaurants, including The Coffee Break, the Garden City Bistro, El Puebla, The Gnarly Taco, and the Black Forest Brewing Company.

It also has very high-end housing in the Garden City Estates on the western edge of the village, north of the Long Island Rail Road, containing beautiful historic mansions. Notable residents of Garden City include John Boyd Thacher II, a mayor of Garden City; John V. L. Pruyn, a diplomat and lawyer, and lastly, Patrick V. McNamara, a New York City Comptroller.
Garden City School District serves Garden City. The district includes six schools, including the Park School, the Stratford School, the Stewart School, the Longfellow School, the Franklin School, and Garden City High School. The Garden City High School mascot is Trojan, and the school colors are red and black. Students may attend two public high schools in the district, Garden City High School andGC High School of Science, Research and Development. The Garden City High School of Science, Research and Development, usually referred to as the GC High School, serves 300 students from Garden City, Malverne, Lynbrook, and Rockville Center. The Garden City High School is often recognized as a top high school nationally by Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report.
