Elmira is a city in Chemung County, New York, United States. The population was 29,191 at the 2020 census. It is the principal city of the Elmira, New York, metropolitan statistical area, which had a population of 100,922.

Culture: The city's cultural scene is highlighted by the Elmira Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1959, which has presented hundreds of classical music concerts over the decades, featuring guest soloists from around the world. The orchestra has performed in various venues around the city, including the historic Elmira Theatre, and, since 1979, in the historic Masonic Temple. History: In 1779, during the American Revolution, the Sullivan Expedition, led by General John Sullivan, passed through the area now known as Elmira. Sullivan's men burnt down several Native American villages in the area, including a Seneca village called Newtown. In 1792, the first European-American settlers arrived. They were primarily people of English and Scottish descent. The site of Newtown was imported by different settlers and quickly grew into a thriving village that hosted its post office. It was officially named Elmira in 1808 and incorporated as a town in 1822.
