HISTORY

* This part of New York was occupied by indigenous people for thousands of years. The first European visitor was likely French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1615. Also scouting the area were other French and Dutch traders.

There were no permanent English settlements in this area until 1788, following the American Revolution.

* The town of DeWitt was founded in 1789 and named after Colonel George DeBitt, a veteran of the New York line during the Revolutionary War.

* The Onondaga Salt Springs Reservation was also in the DeWitt region, to the northwest.
