The location of Los Lunas has been home to various cultures dating back to around 500 AD. The village of Los Lunas was established in 1716 and became a significant commerce and trade center for the agricultural region of the Rio Abajo.

The city hosts annual cultural events such as the Los Lunas Harvest Festival, featuring a chile-eating contest and live music. Near the city, the New Mexico Rails-to-Trails Association has converted much of the former Atlantic and Pacific Railroad right-of-way into a multi-use trail called the Rio Grande River Trail.

The river trail passes through the Rio Grande Nature Center State Park, a unit of the New Mexico State Park system. This park features several natural habitats and recreational activities. In 2018, the Los Lunas Monument, a Ten Commandments monument, was erected by private individuals on private land in the city.

Los Lunas offers a unique dining experience with its restaurants, and the local cuisine has many flavors. There are several attractions within driving distance, including the Falcon International Reservoir, which appeals to outdoor recreation enthusiasts.
