The Rev. John Warne was the first known settler of the town in 1725. The township was formally created on February 26, 1788, from portions of Saddle River Township and the remainder was formed on December 19, 1895 from Franklin Township.

The township was named for Elizabeth Wyckoff, a descendant of one of the earliest settlers.

The township logo depicts a Dutch Colonial barn, which symbolizes Bergen County's rich agricultural past.
