The population of Teaneck as of the 2020 United States Census is 41,605. The population increased by 2,195 (+5.6%) from the 39,410 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn increased by 5,669 (+17.5%) from the 33,741 counted in the 1990 census.

Teaneck was formed on February 24, 1895, from portions of Englewood Township and Ridgefield Township.

It has a total area of 16.77 square miles, of which 16.64 square miles is land and 0.13 square miles (0.78%) is water. It borders Bergenfield, Englewood, Hackensack, Leonia, Ridgefield Park, and Wyckoff.

The oldest documented site of human-made in Teaneck dates back to c.10,000 BC. The site, known as the Magdalenian site, located near the intersection of Teaneck Road and Glendale Road, was a campsite of the Native American tribe that lived in the area.

Teaneck is known for its strong school system, cultural diversity, and elected officials who are involved in their community. Teaneck also houses several historical landmarks, including the Teaneck Armory, which served as a site for troop deployment during World War II.

Teaneck's sister city is Konongo in Ghana.

Teaneck offers various entertainment options, including numerous restaurants, a movie theater, a bowling alley, and a park with walking and bike paths. The township is served by three fire stations and multiple hospitals.

Teaneck is home to the Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center, one of the oldest zoos in the United States, the Turtle Back Zoo, and the Mills Reservation, a 157-acre park.

Teaneck hosts multiple annual events, including a street fair and festival, a farmers' market, and fireworks on the Fourth of July. On Sundays in the warmer months, Teaneck invites vendors from the community to sell their homemade goods at the Teaneck Farmers Market.

Teaneck is highly regarded for its cultural diversity and its provision of restaurants serving an extensive variety of cuisines and delicacies.

There are numerous parks and recreational facilities, including three main parks: the Teaneck Creek Conservancy, a 46-acre nature reserve with several walking trails; one skate park; one dog park; one dog run; and many smaller parks and playgrounds scattered throughout the township. The Hackensack River runs through Teaneck, providing the township's eastern border.
