Runnemede was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on May 26, 1887, from portions of the now-defunct Centre Township. It was named after a famous racehorse. The township was named Centre as it was located at the geographical center of Camden County. On May 26, 1887, the community was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature and named Runnemede. The town's name comes from a famous racehorse.
