Ramsey was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 10, 1898; From portions of the now-defunct Hohokus Township. Additional territory was annexed from Waldwick in 1901.

Ramsey is a small suburban town in northern Bergen County, New Jersey. It is bordered to the south by Allendale, to the west by Waldwick, and to the north and east by Mahwah. Ramsey has a total area of 5.5118 square kilometers (2.131 sq mi), according to the United States Census Bureau.
