Kearny, also known as the "Hub of the Hudson," is a town in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. Kearny was incorporated as a town on January 25, 1917, when it broke away from then-large Harrison Township. More than a century ago, Kearny was a rural farming community.
The town of Kearny today has a population of 42,958 and a total area of 11.2 square miles. In terms of population, it is the 15th largest municipality in Hudson County, the 64th largest in the state, and the 302nd largest nationally (out of 15,000 and more recognized municipalities in the United States, as of 2019).
Although Kearny has the feel of a small town, it also has a rich cultural heritage and diverse population. The Irish, Italians, Germans, Hispanics, Portuguese, Asian, and Latin American have left an indelible mark on the community, creating a unique blend of cultures.
The Kearny Museum, located at 318 Kearny Avenue, houses exhibits depicting Kearny's history, as well as a "cabinet of curiosities" showcasing various natural history specimens. The Kearny Historical Society also hosts seasonal events and programs.
Twin Donuts, located at 384 Kearny Avenue, is a local institution. Since 1984, it has been owned and operated by the same family. Many professional and amateur cyclists stop for coffee and a famous Twin Donuts homemade donut before riding through West Hudson. Twin Donuts has been featured on Food Network and was recognized for its great donuts and coffee.
Another landmark in Kearny is Fiesta Event Center, which hosts larger-scale events like weddings and birthday parties.
