Keansburg, also known as Keansburg-By-The-Sea, is a borough located in Monmouth County, New Jersey, USA. As the population was 10,105 at the 2020 U.S. Census, it is located on the Raritan Bay coast. On October 29, 1917, the state legislature approved the formation of Keansburg, and it was named after John Kean, the then-president of the Central Railroad of New Jersey.
Keansburg is on the Raritan Bay's southern shore, north of Long Branch. Keansburg borders the Monmouth County communities of Middletown Township, New Jersey, to the west, and Hazlet to the east. Unincorporated communities, communities, and census-designated places within Middletown Township include Belford, Fairview, Fort Hancock, Leonardo, Lincroft, Middletown, Middletown (thetownhood), Port Monmouth, and Red Bank. The northern section of Keansburg is nestled along the eastern edge of Sandy Hook Bay. At the 2000 U.S. Census, the town had a total area of 4.1 square miles (11 km2), of which, 2.7 square miles (7 km2) of it (65.84%) is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) of it (9.36%) is water.
As of the U.S. Census of 2010, there were 10,105 people living in Keansburg, with a population density of 3,775.4 per square mile. In the city, 1,843 households, and 1,027 families called it home. 22.6% of all households included children under 18, 33.9% were married couples living together, 15.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 44% were non-families. In Keansburg, 34.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.05.
There were 2,024 out of 1,843 housing units that were owner-occupied. The racial makeup of Keansburg was 65.39% (6,813) White, 24.06% (2,443) Black or African American, 0.53% (54) Native American or Alaska Native, 1.98% (203) Asian, 0.01% (1) Pacific Islander, 7.91% (801) from other races, and 2.23% (228) from two or more races. Hispanics or Latinos of any race were 18.44% (1,872) of the population.
English was the only language spoken at home by 83.2% of the populace, 13.2% spoke Spanish,1.4% spoke Portuguese, and 1.1% spoke Italian.
According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the median income for a household in Keansburg was $41,521, and the median income for a family was $43,080. Males had a median income of $32,330, while the median income for a female was $26,402. The borough's per-capita income was $14,727. Approximately 12.9% of families and 16.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.7% of those who were under the age of 18 and 11.5% of those who were 65 or older.
