Cresskill has a rich history. It was originally formed as a township on April 8, 1891, from portions of the now-defunct Palisades Township. Cresskill became a borough on May 3, 1894, within six months of being formed as a township. At the time, it was the 45th municipality to be incorporated under the borough form of government in Bergen County.
In a 2010 survey, New Jersey Monthly magazine ranked Cresskill as the 75th best place to live in New Jersey, with a total population of 7,943. Over 2,000 households and 1,500 families resided in the borough at the time. The median age was 41.8, and 23.3% of the population was under the age of 18.
