It is 14 miles west of Midtown Manhattan and 17 miles north of New York City's financial district. Bayonne is a 10-square-mile city in Hudson County, New Jersey. It shares boundaries with Jersey City and Hoboken and is immediately accessible to Manhattan via the Bayonne Bridge.

The 17th-century Dutch colonists called Bayonne a "natural Gold Coast." It was a significant shipping center, industrial area, transportation hub, and key military location. Henry Hudson, a British sailor employed by the Dutch East India Company on his ship, the Halve Maen, gave the region its first name. The Dutch colonists were the first to settle the area, followed by the English, then the Irish and Canadians. Then several nationalities formed their own communities, including Germans, Poles, and Italians. Nowadays, Bayonne is called the "Paris of Hudson County" because of the tremendous international diversity of its population.

Bayonne seems to be becoming more and more modern. Built in 2003, The Bayonne Bridge lift bridge was the world's first bridge with a lift span. The city gained notoriety as the birthplace of the Oreo cookie, which was first created by the National Biscuit Company in 1912 at a bakery in the city. In 2015, the factory was torn down.
