The US military first occupied it, then sold its first lots in 1814, and was incorporated as a town in 1843.
The population of Bridgeton in 1870 was only 200 residents, but a big change came about when the natural mineral water springs was discovered in 1882. In 1890, the population had increased to 700, with more growth spurting to 1,400 by 1897.
Bridgeton maintains a small-town charm, giving its residents a sense of community. It has a strong feeling of belonging, and residents celebrate this fact with an annual family-friendly event, "Bridgeton Blues and BBQ Festival," which hosts local music artists followed by a BBQ competition. This event takes place in June.
Bridgeton is also home to the oldest tavern in St. Louis County; The Floyd and Sons Cigar Store and Saloon. Abe Eftink, a local farmer, founded the Floyd and Sons Cigar Store and Saloon in 1874. It was named "Floyd" after a popular saloon habitue. It's still in the same location at 12269 Natural Bridge, Old Town Bridgeton and remains a popular gathering spot for locals and travelers, with a menu including mule liquor and other spirits, homemade cigars, and a choice of poker, blackjack, and other card games. Live jazz performances accompany sports events like darts, trivia, and bowling.
