Bellefontaine Neighbors, Missouri, was born out of a disagreement over the naming of a post office. The post office was supposed to be called Belle Fontaine, after the beautiful fountain on the campus of the old Bellefontaine school. But when the paperwork was submitted, the Postal Service misread the application and left out the space, naming the post office Bellefontaine. The townspeople, not wanting a repeat of the mistake, simply dropped the space to create one word—Bellefontaine Neighbors. Bellefontaine Neighbors is the only city in the United States with this name. The residents affectionately call it “The Neighbors” for short.
