New Albany is a plain city in the northeastern region of Mississippi, in the United State. As of the 2020 census, the population is 8,670. It is the county seat of Union County. A human settlement begun there sometime before 1837, and in 1840 the first post office was opened. A small village exists there, known as Rocky Springs Camp Ground, where the historic Natchez Trace passes through the area. As the villages grew, the residents decided to incorporate it as a town and name it after Albany, New York.
New Albany is a small community that enjoys picnics and community activities. A farmers market provides local produce, handmade crafts, and live music and activities for children. The downtown area of New Albany is a lovely place to stroll and shop. There is a downtown antique mall, as well as numerous boutiques, gift stores, and furniture stores. Also, there are art galleries with local artists displaying their work and an artist co-op.
New Albany offers several fun events that bring the community together. The first summer concert presented by the New Albany Community Arts Association featured five different concerts that were free to the public. The Downtown New Albany car show was a success with over 125 entries. There are plans to have a top-quality festival in the future.
Just outside of New Albany, at the intersection of the trace and Highway 30 West, sits the historic Rocky Springs Campground. Visitors are invited to visit naturally flowing mineral waters that were used by Native American tribes centuries ago. The large, two-story Rocky Spring House, built in 1842, has been completely renovated and features six hotel rooms, conference rooms, and a large dining room. This stop was also along the historic Natchez Trace.
