The city's population grew rapidly during the late 19th century, driven by the construction of the railroad and the establishment of businesses. In 1873, the citizens of Wyandotte petitioned to be incorporated as a city, which was granted by the state legislature in 1881. At that time, it was the second-largest city in Wayne County, second only to Detroit, and still one of the nation's wealthiest cities in per-capita income.
