Mansfield is a town in Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 24,471.
Mansfield is in the south-west suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. It is a small town, consisting of a large residential area and a small industrially zoned area. It is known for its long history, which is showcased in the downtown area, especially along School Street, which hosts a "History Walk".
Mansfield has several parks and recreational areas. The town also has several public schools, including three elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 29.9 square miles, of which 29.3 square miles is land and 0.6 square miles (1.94%) is water.
Mansfield's history dates back to 1656 when it was first settled by European colonists. Prior to that, it was home to indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The area was part of the large Dedham Grant given to Dedham, Massachusetts, in 1636, and was first settled by English settlers in 1656. It saw early activity as a stopping place along the Old Post Road, and growth increased after the construction of the Old Colony Railroad, which was established in 1845. Its economic history includes being a dry farming community, as well as having the first cranberry bog in the United States.
The town has several places on the National Register of Historic Places, including the old town center, now known as the "Historic District".
As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 24,471 people residing in the town. The population density was 817.9 people per square mile. There were 8,684 housing units at an average density of 311.1 per square mile. The racial makeup was 88% White, 2.2% Black, 3.2% Asian, 0.4% American Indian or Alaska Native, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.1% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.8% of the population.
There were 8,388 households, out of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.3% were married couples living together, 34.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 2.2% had a male householder with no wife present. 27.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.13.
The median age in the town was 43 years. The population was spread out, with 22.6% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 29.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females, there were 94.4 males.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the median household income in the town was $118,351, and the median family income was $25,156. Males had a median income of $40,084 versus $30,552 for females. The per capita income for the town was $22,707. About 3.6% of families and 5.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 7.9% of those age 65 or over.
