Severn was named after the Severn River, which runs along the peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The area was once home to the Awitorisky people, a tribe of the Piscataway nation. In 1695, the land was granted to Colonel Henry Ridgely, an English aristocrat, and was primarily used for tobacco plantations. In the late 19th century, the Baltimore and Annapolis Railroad was constructed, which spurred growth in the area, and the name Severn was adopted.

Many historical sites in Severn are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, such as the Benson-Hammond House, a colonial-style home built in the late 17th century, and the historic Annapolis Junction Train Station, built-in 1887.
