Edgewood is a census-designated place in Harford County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 25,376. Edgewood is located 25 miles northwest of Baltimore and 15 miles southeast of Bel Air, the county seat of Harford County. Edgewood was named for its location on the edge of the Piedmont Plateau.

EDGEWOOD'S HISTORY

Edgewood, MD dates back to the 1700s when it was simply rural farmland. The area was primarily used for tobacco planting by wealthy landowners. Since then, it has experienced numerous changes within its borders and is now home to various families and industries.

In 1874, the post office for Edgewood was founded, and in 1890, Edgewood opened its first school. Until this point, children in the area were homeschooled.

In 1900, the population of Edgewood was 200 people.

In 1927, John L. Shenfield bought the Edgewood Farm and started to subdivide it into the lots we know today.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Edgewood became its own unincorporated community. Around this time, Harford County began developing its first comprehensive plan.

In the mid-1900s, Harry C. Riley, a Bel Air attorney, drafted a zoning ordinance and presented it to the county executive. The implementation of this zoning ordinance began the development of Edgewood’s business district, which starts at route 152 and continues down route 24.

The community college opened its first campus, Harford Community College, in Edgewood in 1957.

The oldest Presbyterian church in Maryland, Shrewsbury Church, is located in Edgewood. It was initially built in 1767.

Edgewood is home to the famous Crestwood Manor, a Georgian-style mansion that a multimillionaire commissioned in the 1920s.

In 1985, Longwood estate was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The 1920s manor house had fallen into disrepair but was fully restored and is visible from the road.

In historic Edgewood, you can also find La Tablature, the historic home of Samuel Owens. This home was built in 1760 and has been restored and is open to the public.
