The land where Bridge City is now located was purchased from the US government by John Franks on December 19, 1856. The city was founded about 1902 when a New Orleans businessman named B.C. Fondren built a bridge over the railroad tracks to connect the two parts of the unincorporated community then known as "Pride," which was divided by the Texas and Pacific Railroad tracks.

A one-room schoolhouse was built in 1904, and a post office was established in 1906. By 1914, the area had a population of 900, and its name was changed to Bridge City. In 1970, Bridge City became a town, and in 1973, it became a city.
