The first settler in the area was French-Canadian Henri Chevalier, who built a log cabin near the point where the Estherville River meets Lake Superior in the spring of 1856. He remained there for a year but left due to a treaty dispute between the Ojibwe and the United States government.
Four families moved west from Fort Dearborn (now Chicago) and settled near what is now Estherville in the year 1857. A branch of the Winnebago Trail was close to the settlement, which was once used by the Ojibwe and other Native American tribes. According to local legend, the community was named after Esther Rovall, a local teacher, although there is dispute over this theory. In 1879, the community was formally incorporated.
The post office was established in 1859, and the railroad arrived in 1872. Estherville experienced a significant population rise after the railroad's completion, which also spurred local economic advancement.
In 1895, the first telephone was installed in Estherville.
The Sherburn-Estherville Electric Company brought electricity to the neighborhood in 1899.
In 1935, the airport in Estherville opened and immediately served as a pilot training facility.
During the late 20th century, Estherville had a mall, but it closed in the early 1990s.
