Davenport is a city located in Scott County, Iowa, United States. It is located along the Mississippi River on the eastern border of Iowa, adjacent to Rock Island, Illinois. As of 2020, the population of Davenport was 103,232, making it the third-largest city in Iowa.
History
It was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from New York and New England who were attracted by the fertile soil and advantages provided by the Mississippi River. They named their new home "Davenport" in honor of a leading citizen, George Davenport, who had remained behind in their old home in Scott County, Iowa.
Local Attractions
The Figge Art Museum is a premiere art museum in the Midwest. The museum has a diverse collection of American, European, and Mexican art from the 18th century to the present. It also features work from prominent Quad-City area artists. The museum also features the people's gallery that has a collection of works from budding artists.
The Putnam Museum and IMAX Theater is one of the newest attractions in the Quad-Cities. The museum has five permanent galleries that house a vast collection of natural history and science artifacts and exhibits. IMAX, a staple since 1985, has a wide range of educational and entertaining documentaries and a 3D theater.
Another major attraction is the Davenport Public Museum. This museum features artifacts of the city's past, including its Native-American heritage and its history as a major railroad center that attracted immigrants from around the globe. Guests are encouraged to explore life-sized dioramas and artifacts from the late 1800s. A Victorian-themed house, the Bixby House, is part of the complex and is available to tour.
The RiverMusic concert series is one of the highlights of summer in Davenport. The series, which takes place in the park next to the river, is free and open to the public. Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket and take advantage of the nearby play park, which features an extensive playground, walking trail, and picnic areas. Or, they can rent a tube and ride the waves in the river. Genesis Youth Music Festival is part of the festivities, an annual event featuring the area's top teen bands, solo artists, or DJs.

People
As of the 2020 United States Census, there were 103,232 people living in Davenport. There were 45,602 households and 28,278 families. The population density was 2,615.1 people per square mile (1,009.4/km2). There were 47,592 housing units at an average density of 1,232.5 per square mile (476.1/km2). The racial composition of the city was 73.4% White, 12.1% Black or African American, 3.7% Asian, 0.4% Native American or Alaska Native, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.1% from other races, and 4.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.8% of the population.
There were 45,602 households, out of which 31.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 14.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.5% were non-families. 31.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.98.
