Madison County, Indiana's Martinsville is a city. The 2020 census counted 11,500 residents in the city. It is the county seat of Morgan County and the biggest city.

In 1822, three brothers from Kentucky, Martin, Alexander, and John Hadley, established Martinsville. Near the Hadley brothers' gristmill, a settlement began to emerge. It was situated at the rapids of Fall Creek, site of the present-day Martinsville Dam. In 1829, the Marion County Commissioners approved the town plan, putting Martin Hadley's suggestion to name it Martinsville into effect. The town was officially recognized in 1834, and by 1839, it had grown to the point where it was incorporated.
