Villa Park's history can be traced back to the 1880's when a group of Chicago businessmen, including John H. Burnham, president of the Chicago Art Institute, Francis S. Peabody, a prominent architect, and E.S. Farley, a banker, incorporated the Villa Park Company to develop a planned community. They wanted to create a rural community that would offer a respite from the congestion of the city. The town was formally established in 1901.

In 1908, Edward B. Butler, a Chicago lawyer, bought 80 acres of land in Villa Park and built an important horse breeding farm called the Hill 'n' Dale Farm. This farm was famous for breeding French Percheron horses and was home to some of the most prized animals in the nation.

In 1914, Villa Park's first school was built. The first village president was John S. Bigelow, and the population was 567. In 1925, the Villa Park Library was built. By 1930, the population had grown to 1,731. The Great Depression affected Villa Park, and the village's population dropped to 1,321 by 1940.

However, after World War II, Villa Park saw a surge in growth due to returning veterans starting families and baby boomers being born. By 1970, the population had exploded to nearly 18,000 and continues to grow steadily over the years.
