Jerseyville was laid out in 1834 and named after the Channel Island of Jersey. The Jerseyville Academy was built 1853 and later became the first home of the Jersey County courthouse.

Jerseyville is known for many historic buildings, including the Jersey County Courthouse, which was built in 1891. The courthouse features a Seth Thomas Clock Tower, which is still functional and one of only four remaining in Illinois. There are four structures that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places: the Jersey County Courthouse, the Jerseyville Public Library, the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the George M. Cox House.

Jerseyville hosts several annual events, including the Jersey County Fair, held every July, and Thursday night concerts during the warmer months in the city's downtown Riverfront Park.

Jerseyville has railroad history, first served by the Alton Traction Company and later by the Chicago, Missouri, and Western Railway.

There were several factories in the city, including a shoe factory and a mill. The railroad and factories have long been abandoned or torn down.

Jerseyville's elementary schools, junior high, and high school were consolidated into a single school building in 1974. Jersey Community Hospital opened in 1955, replaced in 2010 with the current Jersey Community Hospital. In 2015, Jerseyville suffered a major blow when a tornado destroyed houses, businesses, and crops.

Jerseyville has several natural features within the city limits, including the Mississippi River, Jersey Creek, and Kaskaskia River. Jerseyville is situated on the Mississippi River Bottom, a floodplain within the larger American Bottom floodplain.

Jerseyville's population was 8,472 in the 2020 United States Census. In 2019, the population was 8,427, with 3,725 households, and 2,447 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,080.2 people per square mile. There were 3,884 housing units at an average density of 954.1 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 98.48 White, 0.44% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, and 0.85% from two or more races.

In the city, the age distribution was 22.3% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.6 males.

The city has several restaurants, including (or previously had): Jerseyville's State Bank, Pizza Hut, Subway, Dairy Queen, Family Video, Casey's General Store, and Monical's Pizza.

Jerseyville is divided into four main shopping districts:

Downtown - The historic central business district of Jerseyville is located along the Mississippi River. The district centers along Main Avenue between Washington Street to the west and Spruce Street to the east.

East Side - Most of Jerseyville's shopping is located along US 67, also known as East Broadway.

West Side - Jerseyville's West Side business district along US 67 (West Pearl) is located 1.6 miles west of Downtown Jerseyville. This area features a mix of retail and office space.

Route 3 - The Route 3 corridor is a rapidly developing retail and office area, located along Illinois Route 3 ( IL - 3).

There are two public schools, Jersey Community High School (grade 9-12) and Jersey Community Middle School (grade 5-8).

Jerseyville is at the crossroads of US 67 and State Route 3. Jerseyville is located 30 miles north of Alton, Illinois, and 30 miles south of Calhoun County, Illinois. The city has two main rivers, the Mississippi and Illinois rivers, and two main creeks, Jersey Creek, and Kaskaskia Creek. The Kaskaskia has a dam. The city has a railroad, which is mainly used for mineral transport.

Jerseyville also has public housing projects; the largest is the Maple Avenue Housing Project (Maplewood) on the city's southwest side.

The community was hit by a violent tornado on November 23, 2015.
