hazel-crest,IllinoisAt the 2020 census, the population of Hazel Crest was 14,366. According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.6 square miles.

Hazel Crest had its beginnings in the early 1950s, and it used to be a rural, farming area.

In July 1959, a group of residents decided to form a local government to provide better protection for their residents. A petition was circulated, and on August 24th of that year, interested residents gathered at Trucco's Hall (now known as Georgios Banquets) to consider incorporation. On December 30, 1959, a referendum was held, and 100 votes were cast, with 77 votes cast in favour of incorporation. Mayor Charles McFarland was elected the first mayor of Hazel Crest on January 26, 1960. Trustees were elected from each of the five districts.

Russell S. Phillips, a local attorney, donated his services to guide the group through the incorporation process. On February 11, 1960, the village's first president and board of trustees were sworn into office.

Hazel crest is located in the heart of the south suburbs of Chicago, just 25 minutes from downtown Chicago. Hazel crest has a Metra rail system that puts residents within easy reach of the city.

In recent years, Hazel crest has become increasingly diverse, with Hispanic, African American, and Asian populations. According to a 2007 estimate, the village has 10,464 people.

Hazel Crest has survived internal political wrangling and racial tension to become a model of suburban community cooperation.

John D. board, a young African American who grew up in Hazel crest, became the village's first black president, presiding over a harmonious and productive five-year term.

The village of Hazel crest commemorated its 60th anniversary in 2019 with a year-long celebration. The year included special events, contests, and a walking tour highlighting the village's founding, past, and present.
