Forest Park is bordered by the city of Chicago to the east, the village of Elmwood Park to the north, the village of River Grove to the northwest, the village of Franklin Park to the west and south, and the village of Oak Park to the south.

Forest Park also features a 30-acre nature preserve and the Forest Park Reservoir used for fishing and kayaking.

On June 12, 2012, a tornado touched down in the área near the intersection of Lake Street and Harlem Avenue, causing some destruction to local businesses and residential buildings.

On March 2, 2016, a fire broke out at the historic Clock Tower building, at the intersection of Madison Street and Harlem Avenue. The building housed several businesses, including the Blue Max Brew Pub, Excess Ink Tattoos, and others. The fire raged during rush hour and commuters were asked to take an alternate route.
