The Snake River flowing through the Snake River Canyon

The city was founded in 1904 as a development of resorts along the Snake River. The city was named for a nearby waterfall, which was formerly known as Twin Falls.Twin Falls were a series of several small falls—the main one having a drop of 18 feet, a second smaller one just downstream, and three minute rapids below that—that were located near the site of the present-day city.

In the late 19th century, technology changes associated with logging caused the falls to disappear, as locally cut timber was no longer moved downstream via log drives. In 1900 a ranch was built across the Snake River below the site of the present-day Milner Dam, which would provide the main source of hydroelectric power in Twin Falls. There were few settlers until the formation of the Twin Falls Water and Electric Company, which began construction on both Milner Dam and a hydroelectric generation plant in 1901.

Boulder Falls, another local waterfall, is located 4 miles below the dam. The 40-foot Boulder Falls has a crest 300 feet wide.
