In 2020, the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the population to be 60,134. The population density was 1,657.9 inhabitants per square mile (639.8/km2). There were 37,449 housing units at an average density of 706.8 per square mile (273.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.4% White, 4.1% African American, 0.3% Native American or Alaska Native, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.1% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.5% of the population.

There were 32,881 households, out of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.3% were married couples living together, 37.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 13.8% had a male householder with no wife present. 28.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.26 and the average family size was 2.76.

In the city, 22.1% of the population was under the age of 18, and the median age was 47.3. Of the total population, 48.5% was male and 51.5% was female. The median household income was $44,211, and the per capita income was $25,264. The percentage of the population living in poverty was 14.6%.

The Port Charlotte metro area, which includes Charlotte and Sarasota Counties, had a population of 122,109.
