Wethersfield, Connecticut, incorporated in 1634, is a town in Hartford County, Connecticut. Wethersfield is situated in the southern part of New England, directly south of Hartford along the Connecticut River, and 13 miles southwest of New Britain. It is rated Number 6 of 15 Best Connecticut Towns to Live In, with a population of 27,000, ranked third for education, first in safety, and fourth in health, with a median home price of $220,600.
Before European colonization, the Wethersfield area was used as a Seybrook Swamp. The area later became Wethersfield was originally called Pyquag, named after a Native American who assisted early settlers.
In 1834, the town was incorporated. The town hall was built in 1889.
Wethersfield has a solid sense of historical awareness. The town's old town hall, erected in 1889, has been repaired and turned into a museum devoted to the history of the town. The Wethersfield museum is also located in town.
Wethersfield hosts an annual Apple Festival, which brings in thousands of people every year. The event is run by the Wethersfield Lions Club and is held in mid-October. There is live music, apple-related activities, and over 100 vendors, as well as a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Lions Club. The event began in 1974 as a celebration of the state's apple harvest.
The sillet lathe, a reconstruction of an early 19th-century lathe used to create hat bands, is located near the entrance of Wethersfield.
