Westminster is a home rule municipality located in Adams and Jefferson counties in the U.S. state of Colorado. The city has a population of 113,166 as of 2020. It is located 9 miles northwest of Denver.
In 1858, before Colorado became a state, pioneers arrived and established the Pleasant Hill School. Later, the Reverand P.L. Ripperton ran a dairy farm in the area. Ripperton s farm was used as a site for Secret Service agents during the Lewinsky scandal.
In 1913, residents voted to incorporate the town as the Town of Westminster. Edward Davidson was elected as the town's first mayor. In the same year, DeBourgh Manufacturing opened its new factory in Denver, Colorado and started producing corrugated boxes. Today, the DeBourgh factory remains one of the oldest businesses still operating in the area.
The town of Westminster became the city of Westminster in 1956 and has a current total area of 33.37 square miles. 81% of the employees work in services, 11% in manufacturing, 7% in retail, and 1% in agriculture. Three interstate highways, Interstate 25, U.S. Route 36, and U.S. Route 287, pass through Westminster. The main terminal of the Denver International Airport is located approximately 20 miles southeast of Westminster.
Since the 1980s, the city has experienced significant growth, and it has been officially recognized as a 'All American City', by the National Civic League.
